My Final Reflection

Image
After what it seems to be only a few weeks, my Genius Hour project is coming to an end. I had so much fun baking recipes that I've never tried before and challenging myself to keep them as healthy as possible. My Genius Hour question was "how will making healthy dessert recipes affect my overall physical health?" Throughout this process of baking healthy goods, I've noticed my cravings for sugar has lessened overall. Even having a few spoons of ice cream or a bite of a chocolate bar is good enough for me to satisfy my sweet tooth. In terms of my physical health, I have noticed I have a little more energy and I'm excited to see where this will take me in the future! The best part about having snacks prepped and ready to go to take with me on the go has been a life saver in the morning. I'm the type of person to hit my snooze button five times before I decide its time to get out of bed. So having these baked sweets already ready has been great! I...

Fingers Crossed

Here we go, the last and final recipe of Genius Hour! I sure hope this goes a lot smoother than the past two recipes. It is crazy how fast the time has flown not only since this project started, but all of September! When I began this project I researched and found a few recipes in advanced to help with time so I didn't have to worry about what I was baking every week. As mentioned in my previous post, I started my student teacher placement last week. Especially working with kids you get tired more easily, and for me I was constantly hungry throughout the day. After finding out some of the students in the class had more allergies than just nuts, I had to go back to the search engine on google as I wanted to enjoy some homemade goods all throughout the week. Each week my challenge has been to try and find one vegetable in a dessert recipe which I have managed thus far. But on top of that, this week I had to look up dairy-free AND nut-free recipes which I found a tad tricky. I wa...

What a CRAZY week!

This week has been nothing but exciting and new adventures. As a teacher candidate, you are required to complete placement in various schools for a certain duration of the year. I started my first placement on Wednesday and all I can say is WOW! I was nervous going into a school I've never been before, let alone meeting all the children and staff. As soon as I met my associate teacher and the students walked in to start their day, my nerves disappeared. I cannot wait for the upcoming weeks to start mini lessons and begin my official teacher journey!!! In all schools, being a nut free environment is common. Many students have all sorts of peanut and nut allergies that require students to bring food without those ingredients. But it doesn't stop there. A student in my class has a dairy allergy. For most people without allergies, we often take for granted being able to indulge in foods with milk and eggs. In my next blog post I will challenge myself to find a recipe that does no...

Let's get started!

I'll be honest, I've never written a blog before so this whole process is a little nerve wracking for me.  But I think I'm starting to get the hang of it (or at least I hope so). Over the course of this week, I've been thinking about how my Genius Hour project will unfold by the end. Will I have enough time to bake? Will the recipes even turn out? What happens if I cant find a lot that seem exciting to try? All these questions and I had to keep reminding myself to BREATHE! Life can get so busy at times that you don't know which way to go. As a student working part-time, I often try to come up with the best way to manage my time to include things I want to try, which for me is trying new food. I am the type of person to always have smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day as oppose to three big ones. To begin, I started looking at some cookbooks and recipes online to give me some inspiration. Thankfully, I follow a few athletes and health influencers on soc...

WELCOME TO MY BLOG!

Image
My Genius Hour Blog Hey everyone! My name is Milica (pronounced Melissa) Mrkonjic and I am a first year Consecutive Education (primary/junior) student at Brock University. Ever since I could remember, I've always wanted to become a teacher. This may sound cliche but nothing is more rewarding than having a child get that "light bulb" moment when everything they've been struggling with suddenly clicks. I hope to bring my enthusiasm, passion and kindness to every classroom. I am looking forward to this teaching journey and cannot wait to see what my future holds!  To learn more about me, feel free to check out my "passionate apple" word art below and/or visit my Pinterest  All About Me   page.
